The Embassy Suites in Midtown is a brand-new hotel on 37th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Although this area is crazy busy (just a few blocks from the lights of Broadway and the giant Macy’s on 34th Street), it is super convenient.
There are plenty of places to eat nearby, including Xi’an Famous Foods and Shake Shack. It’s also a nice half-hour walk to Columbus Circle or SoHo (if the weather isn’t too hot) and an easy subway ride to pretty much anywhere.
Embassy Suites Midtown Manhattan, located at 60 West 37th Street, has 39 floors of “studio suites.” All room types are about 300 square feet, with some featuring balconies. Rooms cost $250-$300 per night, but we booked using Hilton Honors points: 280,000 points for five nights (pay for four nights, get the fifth free). My Hilton Honors Platinum membership gave us complimentary high-speed internet access, two bottles of water, and snacks at check-in. All rooms come with a free hot breakfast buffet and a happy hour every evening featuring free snacks, wine, beer, and bottom-shelf liquor.
We arrived at the hotel just before 7 PM. There weren’t any bellmen, but there were luggage carts in the lobby, so we grabbed one.
The lobby features a soaring water feature, but it often soaked the floor. Employees were frequently seen mopping it up, which made the attorney in me cringe. The front-desk staff were professional and friendly, offering bottled water and snacks like Snickers, Reese’s Pieces, popcorn (there’s a microwave in the room!), and Fig Newtons. The lobby also has a 24-hour snack bar, a lobby bar, and computers for printing boarding passes, reminiscent of old internet cafes.
The bathroom, visible as you enter the room, was modern and clean, with glass shower doors but limited countertop and storage space.
The king bed had about 1.5 feet of space on all sides—cramped, but clean! Hidden drawers at the foot of the bed provided extra storage, and a flatscreen TV was mounted nearby. The living area featured a second flatscreen TV, an ironing board, and a single-use coffee maker with Coffee Bean teas and coffee. Under the coffee machine, there was an empty refrigerator and a microwave. I loved this setup—nothing worse than hotel fridges packed with overpriced snacks you can’t move, especially when food storage is vital for traveling with a baby.
Next to the fridge and microwave cabinet was a small armoire with a safe, one empty drawer, and oddly placed hangers. These hangers weren’t ideal for keeping clothes wrinkle-free, so I hung items on the bathroom robe hook instead.
All in all, this was a great value stay. The complimentary breakfasts and happy hour drinks were a plus, the service was friendly, and the room was nice and clean. While the room was small (welcome to New York!) and the elevator wait times were long (three elevators servicing 39 floors), it was still a good choice for one or two adults.
