If you’re in Copenhagen, visiting Tivoli Gardens is an absolute must! Tivoli celebrated its 175th anniversary last year, and it was Walt Disney’s inspiration for Disneyland (which opened over 100 years later). And like Disneyland, Tivoli Gardens is enjoyable even if you’re not traveling with kids —it is an amusement park designed for all ages to enjoy. Imagine Disneyland with amazing food, beautiful gardens and wide open green spaces, amazing food, and a much more laid-back, less frenetic vibe.
The rides are more “carnival” than Six Flags, but there’s something for everyone. There’s alcohol for the adults (my first stop was to the mojito stand, lol) and a casino, plus carousels, cotton candy, popcorn, and live music and twinkle lights after dark. It’s so, so great!
Where to Eat and Drink in Tivoli
Tivoli has a food hall with legitimately good food (click here for a listing) plus real restaurants and food stands scattered throughout the park.
We went to Gemyse at the suggestion of our Foods of Copenhagen food tour guide, Fie. Gemyse is in a gorgeous garden and serves organic, fresh produce — but we came here for the fire pits.
For 35dkk per “snack,” you can get set up at your own fire pit to roast your own “twist bread” (kind of like a pretzel) and/or marshmallows. We set up at our fire pit in the garden, sipped wine, and watched the park lights illuminate at dusk.
Cost of Entry to Tivoli Gardens
Your entrance ticket to Tivoli Gardens (120 dkk, about $20) does not include the cost of rides. Ride tickets can be bought (like scrip at a carnival) or you can buy an unlimited rides ticket.
We went to Tivoli in the late afternoon and didn’t think we needed the unlimited rides tickets, but after paying the equivalent of $40 U.S. dollars for Jules to ride the carousel and cars twice each, I wondered if we should have gotten her an unlimited ride ticket.
